>> more

A dry, dusty track bends its way back around the point. To the left of me red desert plains with a distant low mountain range showing little signs of life other than a few wild horses and the odd Kangaroo. To my right lies an ocean full of life.

The East Coast of Australia has unlimited surfing potential. Countless beachbreaks and pointbreaks can be found on this beautiful stretch of coast. There is no need to surf the major cities and the popular spots like Superbank. Get in the car and stop at the lesser known breaks and you will find yourself sharing the waves only with a few other people. The following photos were shot around Christmas at one of the less popular spots. We surfed a decent beachbreak every day, enjoying ourselves, laughing and not fighting for the waves. I don’t think I met an overseas surfer in Sydney until 1993 (after 7 years of surfing). These where usually Americans heading up to the north coast points. Now Germies, French, Brazil nuts and team Nippon are EVERYWHERE & part of the furniture at most sydney breaks. To be honest, I wish they where not, as the surf is crowded enough already.

I am always envious of travellers with all the freedom & time on their hands, as you get older your surfing is more and more squeezed into compartments bewteen work, family etc. Time to surf all day is a luxury. Next it amazes me that people actually want to come and stay and surf in Sydney. If you have come here to surf you need to leave Kuta. But sooooooo many overseas travellers seem to just focus on here and the Gold Coast. Are they scared of what lies outside the city? We do a high quality red-neck in this country.

Don’t take this personally Robbie, this is not directed at any one individual and you have been around long enough to understand the workings of it all.

There is a golden era, when the traveller (be it surfer or not) is not common, it’s refreshing and interesting for everyone involved. THIS ERA HAS PASSED in the Sydney surf scene.

I love travelling and generally had a great time with locals everywhere, so why am I so unwelcoming ??. The global beginner boom has changed everything and yeah I should just ‘get over it’. But sorry, surfing many parts of Sydney is dysfunctional. We locals work hard to get anything that resembles quality, with a moderate crowd.

So if you are travelling to Australia, please stay away from our major cities and iconic surf spots, they are already over stressed.

Please find one of the many uncrowded spots in this country, have all the fun, laughs and waves you want.

Sydney Morning Herald :: 11.01.2008

Ever since seeing Bra Boys, I’ve thought that the best way for Russell Crowe, the film’s executive producer, to deepen his understanding of the North Maroubra mob would be to learn how to surf there. He might, like the surfer I saw last summer, get headbutted. It’s no mean feat to headbutt someone else while sitting on your surfboard, but on a crowded, bad-tempered Saturday morning kindergarten behaviour can be the norm. >> more

North Narrabeen on Sydney’s Northern Beaches has been the epicenter of Junior surfing at the beginning of January 2008. The young surfers were battling for the Junior Championships 2007 Title. The German Nicolaus von Rupp showed a brilliant performance and defeated top surfers and made his way to the quarterfinals where he lost to the American Tanner Gudauskas. The winner of the event was the Brazilian Pablo Paulino who took the ASP Junior Championship title home, just three years after he won the event the first time. The pictures in the photostory were taken on rainy Day 3, where huge surf at North Narrabeen created a challenging testing ground for the young surfers.

It’s a hot summer’s day and Bondi lives up to its reputation as the world’s most famous beach. Everyone tries to secure a little spot on the warm sand: Surfers, families, backpackers, lifesavers, film crews etc. Check out this photostory to understand what Bondi is all about a few days before New Years Eve.
